The five types of string

The string matters more for your feel than the frame. The essentials in brief.

Natural gut

From cow gut. The benchmark for elasticity and feel: very comfortable, easy on the arm, plenty of touch. Expensive and high-maintenance.

Nylon

The all-round classic. Good elasticity, solid durability, fair price. Uncomplicated, ideal for juniors and recreational players.

Multifilament

Many ultra-thin fibres, coated. Comes closest to natural gut: very easy on the arm, light power. Frays as it wears.

Polyester (mono)

The performance class. Control and spin come first, very durable. Notches in before it breaks.

Hybrid

Two different strings: the main characteristic in the mains, the complement in the crosses. Typically spin in the mains, power or comfort in the crosses.

Unsure?

In the string test set you put together strings of 12 m each to try out – you choose the number and gauge, cheaper from 3 strings.

To the string test

Gauge, tension, replacement

String gauge

Common gauges are 1.10 to 1.40 mm. Thinner plays better, thicker lasts longer. A good compromise: 1.24 to 1.27 mm.

Tension

Higher tension means more control, lower tension more comfort and perceived power. Ball speed hardly changes.

When to restring

As many times a year as you play per week: if you play twice a week, about every six months. With polyester strings and a lot of training, more often.

Want to go deeper? The string expert knowledge covers stiffness, tension loss, energy return and spin potential in detail.

Frequently asked questions about strings & stringing

Which string lasts the longest?

Polyester strings from 1.30 mm, for example our BEAST in 1.30 mm. Thicker strings last longer but give somewhat less spin and feel. If your strings break often, we are happy to advise you on string and tension.

What tension do you recommend?

That depends on your racket, contact point, technique and arm history. Frame and string together make up your setup, which is why we also determine string and tension in the Fitting.

Do you offer a stringing service – also for other brands?

Yes. You can drop off or send in your racket (any brand). We'll advise you on the right string and tension and send it back to you ready to play.

How does sending in a racket for stringing or tuning work?

1. Book the service in the shop: stringing service or grip adjustment & Racket Tuning.
2. Send your racket, well packed, to myRacket GmbH, Bahnhofstraße 82, 63263 Neu-Isenburg, or drop it off by arrangement.
3. We carry out the service and send the racket back to you, or you pick it up. With the stringing service, it is ready to play again 3 to 5 working days after we receive it.

What does the stringing service cost?

From €37.50 including string, up to €45 depending on the string – with myRacket BEAST or Kirschbaum strings. We also string rackets of other brands: you drop your racket off or send it in, and we advise you on string and tension.
